10/08/26 – In Phys Ed, second and third grades have been practicing throwing, catching, and aiming. Last week Mrs. Carpenter started them out on this activity, and they became acquainted with their own abilities. This week, after repeating last week’s activity, they then were challenged to try to throw as far as they could, aiming for a basket across the yard. It was quite hilarious. (See video)
Grades 4 through 8 continue to do lawn bowling at the Frick Park Lawn Bowling Club. Our students are improving and having fun with each session. This is a great activity because it suits all ages. As soon as someone can roll a ball, they can begin to learn lawn bowling. If you and your child would like to try it outside of school hours, the Club hosts Community Bowling every Thursday evening (beginning at about 6:30 p.m. at this time of year). The season is almost over, but, depending on the weather, it is still happening. Until the end of October, and then again beginning in mid-May, if you show up at the greens at 7300 Reynolds Street in Point Breeze on Thursday evenings, you can get a lesson from an experienced bowler. It’s fun! And I’m almost always there on Thursdays, too.
See you at the greens!

9/10/26 – Due to some recent treatment of the bowling greens, lawn bowling needed to be cancelled for today. So lawn bowling will not begin for grades 4-8 until September 24th. Until then, we’ll try out our new parking lot surface by playing Pickle Ball.
Please be sure your children wear sneakers that fit snugly. We don’t need anyone turning an ankle while playing!
Thank you.
9/3/26 – We had planned on starting our sessions at the lawn bowling greens this week with the 4th-5th and 6th-8th grade classes, but due to the predicted high temperatures feeling like 100°F, we postponed until next week. NOTE: Next week only the 4th-5th grade class will lawn bowl because the 6th-8th grades will be on a field trip with Mrs. Glenn & Ms. Erin to the Flight 93 Memorial near Shanksville, PA.
The 2nd-3rd grades have not been affected by any of these changes, and had a wonderful time playing a ping pong ball aiming game in the cool of the auditorium this week. Next week, if the weather allows, they will try some racquet skills outside.
NOTE ALSO: All PE shirts have been handed out to all grade levels. Students are expected to wear them each week on their gym day, so please make sure they are clean, ready, and worn.
See you next week!
8/20/26 – Welcome to “The Phys. Ed. Connection” — the section of the Chalk Talk where you’ll see photos of your children as they grow stronger in mind and body through exercise and play. In each PE class I’ll help every child discover and deal with their strengths, their limitations, and their style. They will be taught rules for various games and techniques to help them achieve their potential. Students will learn that I require everyone to come to class with an affirmative attitude, that they treat each other with respect; I will do the same: This is simply good sportsmanship and a good way to be in all areas of life; so I think of P.E. as a great place to practice these life skills.
Athletic shirts with the school design will be handed out on the first day of PE. Students are required to wear these shirts on their assigned day of PE. Be sure that shirts are cleaned and ready to be worn each week! (Note: As I write this, our schedule has yet to be finalized, so stay tuned for your child’s PE day to be determined.) In addition, on their PE day, students should complete their outfit with appropriate athleticwear: pants or shorts, sneakers, and sweatshirts without hoods. They are allowed to wear their PE clothes all day if they’d like, or they can bring their athletic clothes in their backpacks and change into them during lunch recess if they’d rather. Sweatshirts and hats with the school logo on them are always appropriate and acceptable, and are available for purchase either at the school or online. At the school see our Admissions Director, Samantha Roland, who can check what we have in stock to sell you. If you’re in luck, there may even be some on our rack of used uniform clothing that former students have turned in. Otherwise you are welcome to order dress code approved items from BeeGraphix: https://stores.inksoft.com/PittsburghNewChurchSchool/shop/home
Parents, please note: In the event that your child is sick or injured, I would like a note from the parent telling me of the injury or limitations necessary for PE class. If I do not hear from you and your child tells me they aren’t feeling well, I will use my best judgement, but I prefer to have a note from a parent. Feel free to contact me with any concerns regarding your child and their participation in PE. My cell number is 412-596-8271. Leave me a message or text if I do not answer. I will get back to you as promptly as possible.
Someone once said that physical fitness is the first requisite of happiness: I look forward to bringing much happiness into the lives of all our students at PNCS. See you soon!
